I graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in graphic design. While in college, I took a few courses in photography and fell in love. A few years later, I decided to follow my passion and founded Melanie Mahonen Photography. My background in graphic design gives me a better eye for composition and the ability to think of a bigger vision than just one photo at a time.

What I love most about photography is being able to capture a millisecond and preserve that memory in a beautiful image for years to come. I truly believe that a great photo is one that will be become an heirloom.

I bought my first "real" camera in 2004. I have a natural thirst for knowledge that allowed me to be a fully self-taught photographer. For months before I even owned my camera I was reading about lighting, exposure, and lenses. What drew me to photography is that I loved the idea of using technology to make something beautiful. When I shoot, I like to be a fly a on the wall; no one knows I'm there but I'm capturing the interactions between people and events as they unfold naturally.
